Chris here, checking in to talk about the eventful (literally) first month I’ve had at Relish Catering + Hospitality.
Surrounded by an incredible team, I’ve spent my first few weeks learning just about everything I can in preparation for what’s shaping up to be a very busy September. When I joined the Relish team, I hoped to focus my career on event management, and I can confidently say that I’m getting exactly the experience I was looking for.
One of the highlights of my first month has been visiting client offices and learning firsthand how meetings, planning sessions, and event logistics come together. One visit even brought me to the office of a company behind a video game I absolutely love, which was a pretty memorable experience. But as exciting as those visits have been, my favorite office is still the one I work in every day.
Starting a new job can feel intimidating, but I felt at home almost immediately. In fact, I was decorating my desk within my first week. That sense of comfort comes largely from the people around me. The Relish team is made up of a wide range of personalities, but instead of clashing, they create an energetic, collaborative atmosphere that fills the office every day.
As for what I’ve learned, the list is already long. I’ve been introduced to new software platforms, office procedures, and best practices for documenting client needs and event details. But one of the biggest surprises has been discovering just how creative and talented the Relish culinary team is.
The kitchen is constantly introducing me to ingredients, flavors, and combinations I have never encountered before. One day I’m learning about jackfruit paired with mac and cheese, the next I’m new cocktail recipe that I’m already planning to recreate with friends. Food is a frequent topic of conversation around the office, whether it’s discussing weekend cooking adventures or brainstorming menu ideas. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that working in this building means constantly smelling something delicious and wondering when you’ll have the chance to try it yourself.
On a more serious note, one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is just how much work goes into providing food and hospitality for an event. When you think about it, food is often at the center of any gathering, making it one of the most important components of the overall experience. Delivering that experience requires an incredible amount of planning, coordination, and attention to detail.
During my training with Spencer, she shared a piece of advice that has stuck with me: “Nothing comes out of thin air.” Every successful event is the result of careful preparation and making sure every detail is accounted for. That mindset has helped me approach each new challenge with confidence, knowing that thorough planning is the foundation of success.
As with any growing company, there have already been some changes. We’ve said goodbye to a few team members (which feels a little unfair considering I just got here), while also welcoming new faces to the team. Through it all, I’ve been excited to see the company continue to evolve and grow.
If my first month is any indication, this is only the beginning. The challenges ahead are significant, but so are the opportunities. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn, contribute, and be part of everything that makes Relish such a dynamic place to work.
Stay tuned – September is just getting started!
